Smart Open Source Automation

Introduction to an open-source hardware and software platform as a more flexible alternative for expensive and proprietary PLCs like the Siemens S7.

I will show how to easily build an internet connected automation solution with the RasPiCommPlus. By using textual and graphical programming languages defined by the industry standard IEC 61131-3 it behaves like a usually very expensive and closed source PLC. The tools available today make development effortless and straight forward. I will also show how to debug and monitor the system remotely.

Caret as an IoT status Exchange Platform

Caret is an IoT status exchange platform providing a scalable cloud based infrastructure and comfortable client app GUI on smartphones for IoT devices and sensor based services.

The first powerful application of the platform is utilising the built in sensors of the smartphones linking contacts in the address book and enrich them with automatically set status. This results the most dynamic address book of the 21st century.

The infrastructure is built on a solid, massively scalable platform (Erlang, XMPP, Apache Cassandra, Amazon) , which might provide the proper service platform also for other device developers.

Reactive Programming & IoT: a perfect marriage

Social media, open data and now IoT in general brings a lot of 'black box' components which deliver data as flows or streams to be processed by an application. Traditional procedural and object-oriented paradigms have no elegant solution to easily process these streams out of the box. The same is true for (complex) event processing of data coming from sensors, which will even contain higher volumes of data compared to what is coming from existing sources today. To solve this, techniques are taken from declarative programming to process the event streams. In this talk I will introduce dataflow and functional reactive programming with practical examples in Node-RED & Node.js, as a technique to process massive amounts of data as well as on the edge, in the fog as in the cloud. Herausforderung Kundenkommunikation: Worauf es bei der Vermarktung von Endgeräten des IoT ankommt

Verglichen mit den USA oder China zeichnet sich in Europa eine relativ langsame Marktdurchdringung von Endgeräten des Internet of Things ab. Obwohl Hersteller wie Samsung oder Bosch die Vernetzung smarter Produkte stark vorantreiben, bleiben die Heerscharen neuer Kunden aus.

Doch warum lassen sich vernetzte Geräte, die durch die Erfassung von Daten, deren Verarbeitung und Verwendung einen zusätzlichen Produktnutzen schaffen, in Europa nur schwer verkaufen? Oder viel wichtiger: wie bringt man solche Netzwerkkomponenten auch hier an den Mann?

Die Beantwortung dieser Fragen aus einer (kommunikations-)psychologischen Perspektive steht im Fokus des Beitrags. Zunächst wird auf das Verhalten moderner Kunden eingegangen. Themen wie Customer Value und Datensicherheit werden in diesem Kontext genauer beleuchtet. Von elementarer Bedeutung sind natürlich auch die Kommunikationsanforderungen von IoT-Endgeräten. Hierbei stehen die zentralen Spezifika der Kundenkommunikation im Mittelpunkt, die bei der Vermarktung innovativer Produkte und Netzwerkkomponenten zu berücksichtigen sind.

Im letzten Teil des Vortrags werden Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet, die es Herstellern und Händlern solcher Produkte ermöglichen, Kommunikationsstrategien zu entwickeln, um den europäischen Markt zu durchdringen.

IoT – Identity of Things!

Dazzled from the nice things all the connected gadgets can do for us we seem to forget what we have learned in the past 20 years when computers became interconnected in a large scale. Embedding a microcontroller into a coffee machine and attaching network capabilities is not the main engineering challenge today. Getting functional interoperability is a time consuming process but tend to happen by usual demand. But who is managing the flea circus to make sure that owners interests also in regard of security and privacy are properly addressed?

Purely the management of a PC in a 50 device environment costs around 500€/year. A fact that kills most business cases in IoT and lacks on practical possibilities also when considering the expected period of use e.g. of a dish washer. The Cloud is both part of the solution and a problem of its own.

The dimensions of ownership, accessibility and management of the devices are quite complex. Too complex for an average customer.

This presentation will illustrate the need of introducing identity management as a core requirement to your personal cyber-physical environment. Without clear relations between human identities and devices identities the systems won’t scale up. Privacy enhanced federated identity management ecosystems will allow to reduce the attack surface significantly and will also help to reduce the efforts of management.

Mit seinem Artikel “The Computer for the 21st Century“ hat Mark Weiser 1988 die Idee des Ubiquitous Computing vorgestellt. Durch die Allgegenwart von Computern wird eine neue Ära in der Informationstechnologie eingeläutet. Computer sollen verschwinden und durch intelligente Gegenstände ersetzt werden. Diese sollen den Menschen bei seinen Tätigkeiten unterstützen.

Heute werden viele Tätigkeiten durch technische Apparate, Automaten, Maschinen und intelligente Gegenstände - das Internet der Dinge und Services - erleichtert. Grundsätzlich hat das Internet der Dinge ein enormes Potential das Leben einfacher zu gestalten und die Entwicklung ist soweit fortgeschritten, dass die moderne Technik ohne Eintrittsbarrieren einsetzbar ist.

Das Internet der Dinge birgt jedoch auch die Gefahr als Überwachungswerkzeug von Staaten und Konzernen eingesetzt zu werden. Weiters fördert es stillschweigend die technische Abhängigkeit und untergräbt unter Umständen die Freiheit von Entscheidungen und Handlungen.

Internet der Dinge - Segen oder Fluch aus juristischer Sicht?

Pläne großer Elektrogerätehersteller oder der Automobilriesen, wonach bis zum Jahr 2020 komplexe M2M-Systeme – Maschine zu Maschine, soll heißen, dass nicht nur Menschen mit Servern kommunizieren, sondern auch die „Maschine hinter der Maschine“ voll automatisiert Transaktionen einleitet, Handlungen vornimmt und Erklärungen abgibt – in allen Haushalten vertreten sein sollen, lässt bislang ungeahnte Fragen nach verantwortlichen Handlungssubjekten, Haftungsszenarien, Daten- und Systemsicherheit, Datenschutz, Datenanonymisierung und Datenpseudonymisierung sowie Profilbildung aufkommen. So haben auch in Zeiten von IoT Kundendaten zwar weiterhin vornehmlich den Zweck, den Unternehmer – den Hersteller des smarten Gegenstands sowie den Entwickler der Anwendung – in die Lage zu versetzen, seine Pflichten dem Kunden gegenüber zu erfüllen bzw die Gegenleistung einzufordern, allerdings werden sie in einer vernetzten Informationsgesellschaft zunehmend auch „zweckentfremdet“. So bietet vor allem das mit smarten Gegenständen zu generierende Datenvolumen viel Potential, Bedürfnisse und Wünsche der Kunden erkennen, bewerten und Verhaltensmuster prognostizieren zu können, woraus Entscheidungsgrundlagen für Marketingmaßnahmen, Unternehmensstrategien, Investitionen oder Markenimage gewonnen werden. Das Ziehen von Schlussfolgerungen aus der Zusammenstellung von Einzelinformationen auf das Konsumverhalten wird als Profiling bezeichnet. In einem Streifzug durch solche datenschutzrechtliche Hintergründe sollen Problemstellungen bei Anwendungen wie dem automatisiertem Fahren und dem smarten Kühlschrank besprochen werden.

Identity, Security and Privacy are still some of the main subjects of worry with Internet as we know it. Forseeing it populated with millions of connected low-end hardware devices, where security will be traded-off for efficiency raises even more major concerns.

However, Security, which is the foundation upon which Identity and Privacy can be enforced, is more a state of mind and a set of good practices and education, than a technical challenge.

IoT Top 10 of Most Critical Security Risks

Oxford defines the Internet of Things as: “A proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.”

The OWASP Internet of Things (IoT) Top 10 is a project designed to help manufacturers, developers, and consumers better understand the security issues associated with the Internet of Things, and to enable users in any context to make better security decisions when building, deploying, or assessing IoT technologies.

The project defines the top ten security surface areas presented by IoT systems, and provides information on threat agents, attack vectors, vulnerabilities, and impacts associated with each. In addition, the project aims to provide practical security recommendations for builders, breakers, and users of IoT systems.

Spazierschweber - Neue Mobilität in Städten

Der Mensch war immer mobil und wird es auch bleiben. Man muss ihm neue Alternativen anbieten. Dazu wird man sich vom Namen „Automobil“ befreien müssen. Beide Teile des Wortes haben ihre Berechtigung verloren. Es ist nicht „auto“, nicht selbstständig und automatisch; es muss bedient werden und es ist in seiner Mobilität – „mobil“ – eingeschränkt, reduziert.

Ein neuer Typ von Fahrzeug wird kommen, der weder ein Fahrrad, noch ein Automobil ist. Durchschnittlich ist ein Auto heute mit 1,2 Personen unterwegs. Es werden also Fahrzeuge mit einem, aber maximal zwei Personenkapazitäten gebraucht.

In der „individuellen Mobilität“ liegt viel Zukunft. Da unsere Gesellschaft und die nötige Infrastruktur immer weniger Fußgeher hat, wird eine neue Art des „Gehens“ erwartet. Ein „elektrisches Gehen“. Ein unterstütztes und beschleunigtes Gehen. Der Spazierschweber ist so ein Fahrzeug. Ein elektrisch betriebenes Fahrzeug. Die Energie wird von alternativen Energieproduzenten bezogen. Das Fahrzeug wird nicht „aufgetankt“, sondern mit Wechselbatterien – sogenannten Stromflaschen – versorgt.

IoT is complex topic because it is rather group of technologies interconnected than single technology, but that's no reason why cannot be implemented in simple and transparent way. In this talk we will focus on how to get data out of existing system as well as how to design and what to consider during design of new IoT system. Secure and Reliable, Cloud and Remote Service Connections for IoT Applications

One of the crucial issues in IoT domain is a secure and reliable remote service connection. There are many candidates for a communication infrastructure between the smart home ecosystem and service providers, distribution centres or end-users accessing smart home applications remotely. Optimally the access and communication service technology should be already deployed in order to minimize initial investments and in parallel must provide sufficient reliability and security even for critical applications. Therefore, already deployed telco platforms have a strong potential to become the key communication technologies for smart home domain. The existing IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), embedded in or associated with telecommunication networks are providing all the required standards, security and dedicated communication service frameworks for universal remote access methods out of the box. In combination with an IMS-enabled and OSGi-compliant IoT Gateway, they provide a ready-to-use basis for a performing and cost-effective IoT service platform. That is why we investigated the applicability of residential gateway access technology for emerging home automation services. Finally, we developed and demonstrate a middleware solution enabling the “state of technology” IP-based home gateway to serve as a universal multi-purpose enabler for connected home automation systems like smart metering and private grid, alarm systems, photo-voltaic energy production systems, and much more being fully comparable with multi-purpose Gateway Agent concepts.

Interoperability with Standardless IoT

The Internet of Things is overrun with a plethora of standards: AllJoyn, HomeKit, Thread Group, Open Interconnect Consortium, and many many more.

What these standards have in common is their prescriptive nature: “here’s how you do this”. This is a great model if we all agree on the standard - think HTML! - but an unholy mess if we don’t.

But what if we took the opposite approach, simple describing the capability of things and using that as a jumping off point? Is it possible to create interoperability through descriptive standards? The answer - emphatically - is yes.

This talk will be about how standard web technologies - JSON, JSON-LD, Javascript, Node.JS and RESTful models - can be easily be used to “control all the things”.

We’ve worked with off the shelf components such as WeMo, Hue, SmartThings, TCP Lighting, LIFX; toys like littleBits; prototyping tools like Arduino and Raspberry Pis; protocols like UPnP, mDNS, Bluetooth Low Energy; and even “non-IoT” devices like receivers and television sets.

What should a Thing API look like

In the last 15 years, technologists have converged on a simple but powerful model for writing APIs: HTTP, REST, and JSON. The net result is that developers are usually able to pick up new APIs and start getting useful results within minutes.

If we were to use the “API Model” for providing access to Things, what would this look like? This talk walks through real-world examples of what a Thing API should look like, using exactly the same model you would to access any other Internet resource. It outlines some common practical concerns, such as what IDs should be used for Things, how do you differentiate between the “input state” and the “output state” of “real” Things, and how semantics can be added to enable interoperability.

The competitive IoT landscape

Just like the Internet emerged out of nowhere in the 1990s, the Internet of Things has started to emerge out of nowhere in 2013 and 2014. Building IoT Applications With macchina.io And Tinkerforge

macchina.io is a brand new open source software platform for rapidly building IoT applications that run on Linux-based devices like the Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone or RED Brick. It implements a modular, extensible JavaScript (and C++) runtime environment inspired by OSGi, providing interfaces to various kinds of sensors and devices, as well as cloud services. macchina.io is based on the well established POCO C++ Libraries and the V8 JavaScript engine.

Tinkerforge is an open source hardware platform of stackable microcontroller building blocks (Bricks) that can control different modules (Bricklets), typically sensors or I/O devices. Tinkerforge devices are connected to a computer via USB. Alternatively, the RED Brick, a tiny, 40×40 mm Linux computer can be used.

The proposed talk will first give a quick introduction to both macchina.io and Tinkerforge, and will then demonstrate how to build an application that collects various sensor measurements, stores them in a local database, visualizes them on a local website and performs various actions, such as sending SMS messages or posting to Twitter if certain events occur, all with just a few lines of easily comprehensible JavaScript.

RIOT - The Friendly Operating System for the Internet of Things

Everyday, exciting new tiny network devices pop up: the Internet of Things (IoT) is already here - from the hardware side. On the software side however, current platforms made it uneasy for developers to build apps that run on heterogeneous IoT hardware. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't scale down to small, energy- and resource-constrained devices, while smaller footprint alternatives such as Contiki yield a huge learning curve and lengthy development life-cycles, because they rule out standard programming languages, paradigms and debugging.

RIOT is a new open source software platform for embedded devices that bridges this gap. In this talk, we will give a brief background about RIOT. In particular, we will illustrate how any programmer can develop applications on typical IoT devices with zero learning curve and shortened development life-cycle, using standard languages (C or C++) and well-known tools such as gcc, gdb, valgrind, and make.

SmartSARAH HomeAutomation and an Introduction into CoAP

In allen Bereichen des Lebens werden wir zunehmend von Technik begleitet. Im Eigenheim hilft uns Smart Home Automation, um energieeffizient zu wohnen und den Alltag angenehmer zu gestalten. Das Open Source Projekt SmartSARAH (Self Actuated Residential Automated Habitat) entwickelt eine offene Hardware und Softwareplattform, die es den Nutzern ermöglicht, sein Zuhause einfach und bequem zu überwachen und zu steuern. Eine Schlüsselrolle spielen dabei moderne Kommunikationsgeräte wie SmartPhones, Tablets, Smart-TV und Webtechnologien.

Mit SmartSARAH können Sensoren örtlich verteilt und ihre Werte eingestellt oder angezeigt werden. Die Daten der Sensoren können als Zeit-Diagramme angezeigt werden. Die Sensoren und Aktoren werden über IPv6 vernetzt. Für die Aktoren und Sensoren kommen 6lowPAN-Funkknoten (Merkurboard) zum Einsatz, auf denen das Open Source Betriebssystem ContikiOS zum Einatz kommt. Die Aktoren und Sensoren werden über einen Edge-Router aus dem eigenen Netzwerk oder über das Internet erreichbar.

Dank freier Lizenzen beliebig erweiterbar.

In diesem Talk gibt Harald einen Überblick über den Aufbau von SmartSARAH und führt dabei in das Protokoll CoAP, welches für die Kommunikation zwischen den Funkknoten verwendet wird.

Industrie 1.0 meets Business 4.0

The steam engine was the cornerstone of the first industrial revolution. In our talk, we present a steam engine and make it a part of „Industry 4.0“. Using sensors, the steam engine pushes its current parameters to our IoT server. We then use an augmented reality Android app to visualize these parameters right on smartphones or tablets.We believe that augmented reality in conjunction with IoT is a trendsetting technology. We have been working on implementations of this for months. This combination of technologies enables us to present information where it is needed: right in front of the human eye.

Industrial Prototyping with TinkerForge

Aus dem Hause Tinkerforge kommt ein im Umgang sehr einfaches elektronisches Baukastensystem. Je nach Anwendung kann ein System aus Sensor-, Funk- und Motorsteuerungselementen modular aufgebaut, mit ein paar Zeilen Quellcode programmiert werden und es wird kein Lötkolben benötigt. Sowohl die Hardware als auch die Software sind Open Source. Wir werden uns einen Überblick über die Sensoren und Aktoren verschaffen und uns dann zügig der Programmierung zuwenden. Ziel ist der Überblick über die Einsatzmöglichkeiten, Architekturen und die Kombination mit Java.

Peak Power Solar Charger with 6loWPAN connection

The OS-domotics iot-austria “Merkurboard” is a small hardware that can be used with contiki-OS for IoT (internet of things) applications. In the application used in the talk, the board was used to control a peak power charger for a lead-acid battery. Voltage from the solar power module, voltage of the battery, and the current to the battery are available as Contiki resources via the constrained application protocol CoAP.

The application serves as an example what is possible with existing IoT frameworks.

The hardware as well as the software are available under Open Source Licenses.

NodeRed - A visual tool for wiring the Internet of Things

SeCoS - Web of Things ‘Application Platform’ - applied in Industrial Internet applications

A plea for better and more sustainable distruptive technologies

Smart technologies require Smart People. According to the Eurobarometer the world is concerned! Biggest problems like war, pollution, waste, proliferation of nuclear weapons, infectious diseases, increasing global population, the availability of energy, terrorism and the economic situation bother people around the globe with leaving poverty, hunger and the lack of drinking water the absolute number 1 issue globally. Instead of producing yet another form of Information Technology garbage our field should take these aspects into consideration when creating amazing technologies. In my presentation I will hopefully inspire you to go beyond the aspect of “what is technically feasible”. I will speak about suitable frameworks and development processes that will help us overcome the current nonsense and let us set a new focus for 2020 and beyond.
